A Little about my Interest in Baseball

I am probably no better at baseball trivia than any other form of trivia which means I am not likely to be able to answer obscure questions although sometimes stray, obscure facts do pop into my mind. I enjoy going to a game and I have my own biases (doesn't every fan).

I may be in the minority but I like a good defense. High scoring games can have their moments but in general I prefer a well played, low scoring game. This is not to say that when the Phillies blow large leads I don't worry if any lead is large enough.

Another of my biases is the designated hitter. I really don't like the concept. Fitting right in with this I like pitchers who can hit. I don't expect a pitcher to lead the league in batting but the idea that a pitcher is an automatic out just rubs me the wrong way.

I started keeping score in high school. It was safer for all concerned if my role on the girls' softball team was score keeper. Since that time I have picked up a number of tricks from my younger son, Jeff, and find that I have a reasonable record of what happened. My score book is basically Jeff's design that I had a lot of fun programming (the graphics are sneaking in here).

I didn't get tagged as a baseball nut until after I started attending minor league games as well as major league games. These games increase ones knowledge of players in the farm system but they are fun in their own right because you are much closer to the action than in the large major league parks. Spring training has similar appeal.

My camera has been known to accompany me to ball parks. It gets rather hectic when I try to keep score and take pictures during a game but that some times gives a different view. Although I might not take a picture, concentrating on a particular player helps me observe some of the subtleties.
