To be eligible for consideration,
students should:
1. Have a grade point average of 3.3 overall.
2. Have a grade point average of 3.5 in their major courses.
3. Submit letters of recommendation from two faculty members,
at least one of whom is in the sociology department.
4. Submit a copy of one or more papers representing their best
written work.
Students must apply before the beginning their senior year. Optimal
times are in the fall of the junior year, or the spring of the sophomore
year. Information on application procedures, general regulations,
and application forms is available in the College of Arts and Sciences
office. The first step in the application procedure is to see the
Assistant Dean for Advising who is responsible for submatriculation.
Note that the College allows a maximum of four courses which may
be double counted for the B.A. and master’s degree. In addition
to the College regulations, submatriculants in sociology should
be aware of the following:
1.Students must satisfy all the standard requirements for a master’s
degree in sociology, including a research paper. A list of requirements
is available in the sociology office.
2. To complete the master’s degree, students should ordinarily
expect to spend at leat one year beyond the four years required
for the B.A. (Students who enter the graduate program with a bachelor’s
degree, usually take two years to complete a master’s).
3. The submatriculation program is completely distinct from the
Ph.D. program. Students in the submatriculation program are not
ordinarily eligible for graduate fellowships or teaching assistantships,
and those who wish to continue toward the Ph.D. must reapply for
that program.
