Undergraduate Programs- Society of Culture

The courses listed under each concentration are the sort that can be used to meet the 4 c.u. requirements for the concentration. Additional courses, such as “Special Topics” courses (Sociology 230), will be available from time to time. Each student’s program must be approved by the undergraduate chair to ensure that it is sufficiently comprehensive and coherent.

The sociology of culture investigates an aspect of human life that is central to its definition, the origins and development of meanings - religious, moral, normative, esthetic, cognitive - and how they are expressed in and serve to shape human conduct. Processes of cultural innovation as well as cultural stability are examined in various social institutions and settings of American as well as Middle Eastern, European, and Asian societies.
