| Graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania is conducted
through graduate groups formed according to different areas of study.
These groups, rather than academic departments in the School of
Arts and Sciences, administer programs leading the to the A.M. and
Ph.D. degrees. Those seeking a graduate degree in Sociology should
apply to the Graduate Group in Sociology.
Penn Sociology focuses its energy in six
cluster areas. These clusters provide for intellectual
synergy among faculty and students. Students and faculty may participate
in as many clusters as they wish, and typically participate in more
than one cluster. The clusters meet periodically, providing graduate
students with the opportunity to present their work and to get to
know faculty in an informal setting.
The clusters evolve as faculty and students interests change. At
present there are six clusters: Culture; Demography; Economic Sociology;
Families, Gender and Work; Medical Sociology; and Race, Ethnicity
and Immigration in Urban Society.
It is possible to earn a dual Ph.D. in Sociology and other disciplines.
For example, some students earn a dual Ph.D./J.D. or dual Ph.D./M.D.
Students must be accepted into both programs.
It is also possible to earn a joint degree, for example, some students
earn a joint degree in Demography and Sociology, by satisfying the
requirements of both graduate groups, and writing a single dissertation.
Other students have obtained joint degrees in Sociology and Education,
and Sociology and History(although this is less common). Students
seeking a joint Ph.D. combining Sociology with some other field
must be admitted in that field (as well as Sociology); this can
occur after admission to the Sociology program; and in any event
should be done with the consultation of the Chair of the Graduate
Group in Sociology.
For admission information for the Department's Ph.D. program
or to direct questions to the Graduate Chair, interested
parties should contact Ms. C.A. Saunders, Graduate Coordinator @
